Title:
Pair of Carrier Pigeon Leg Cannisters, circa WWI
Description:
Radios were relatively new in WWI and carrier pigeons were used as backup for communication.
The Ketchikan Alaska Chronicle reported that, "the Alaska Aerial Service has been augmented by the addition of … pigeons, which Roy Jones has secured. These pigeons…were known to have made flights of 800 miles in a single day. They will be trained to make Ketchikan their home base and Jones will take them with him…to bring back important messages or to notify the office…if any accident should occur." Jones urged local kids to avoid shooting at the pigeons.
