Cover Commemoration of Annette Island Airport, 1977

The U.S. Postal Service issued this cover, essentially an envelope "cover", in honor of the last day of operations of the Annette Island Airport on July 31, 1977. Annette Island can be seen south of Ketchikan and is home to the community of Metlakatla. Prior to the opening of the Ketchikan International Airport in 1973, the Annette Island Airport provided Ketchikan's primary passenger service. Amphibian aircraft then provided service from the airport to the Ketchikan Harbor Seaplane Base.
