A tachometer measures engine RPMs (revolutions per minute). This measurement, like an odometer in a car, allows the mechanic to track maintenance needs. A Hobb's Meter is similar but measures the exact time that an engine is running by using oil pressure or when the alternator is activated, a difference that could mean extra expense if you're being charged by the minute. This is like if you were sitting in your car while it's idling versus actual driving.
