Into the Wind
Title:
Roy Jones and the Northbird in Juneau, 1923
Description:
Max Humphrey, a sales representative for Hills Bros. Coffee, and George Langer, representing U.S. Rubber and Seattle businesses, were among the first salesmen to fly in Southeast Alaska. Jones had been operating for nearly a year when this flight was made. Salesmen, mining interests and cannery
officials were among his most frequent fliers.

Humphreys and Langer went onto Skagway and then by train to Whitehorse. From there, they went by a horse-drawn sled to Lower Lebergo. After the spring breakup, they went on down the Yukon River by steamboat. Their transportation challenges, which were shared by all travelers in Alaska and Canada, inspired Jones to explore the idea of extending an airline from Ketchikan to the Interior of Alaska. It would be many years before any airline served that much of Alaska.
