Mildred Manty (1911-1978)
Manty, originally from Connecticut, traveled to Hawaii during World War II as a nurse. After the war, she settled in Hilo and worked at local pineapple plantations. Manty lived in Hawaii for several years and was named "Woman of the Year" in 1956. In 1963, Manty moved to Alaska.
Manty was a longtime Public Health Nurse with the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services in the Ketchikan area. She was named Ketchikan's Distinguished Citizen of the Year in 1975. Manty was known to many as the a logging camp nurse" because she spent much of her time traveling between the 20 logging camps in the region that provided timber to the Ketchikan Pulp Mill, in addition to many remote communities.
On August 25, 1978, Manty was killed in a plane crash in Sumner Strait, northwest of Prince of Wales Island. Manty Mountain on Prince of Wales Island is named in her memory.
