Title:
Charcoal Point School Grades Four and Five, circa 1930
Photographer:
Elliot L. Fisher
Description:
Charcoal Point School operated from around 1920 to 1933, serving students from Austin Street to Shoreline Drive. The building had been Dynamite Joe's, a roadhouse. Originally a Territorial School, Charcoal Point had its own school district and school board. The district paid for its students to go to high school in town. In the spring of 1933, residents voted to extend the Ketchikan city limits out to Smiley's Cannery near Wolf Point. As students could then go to White Cliff or Main School, the Charcoal Point School was closed.
