Rudyerd Bay From a Cliffside, circa 1917

Description:
Rudyerd Bay extends into the mainland from Behm Canal, east of Ketchikan. It was named in 1879 by W.H. Dall, a U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey engineer. Dall named it for John Rudyerd, the engineer who designed the third of five lighthouses in 1703 that have been built on Eddystone Rock, near Plymouth, England. Rudyerd Bay is two miles northeast of New Eddystone Rock, named by Captain George Vancouver in 1793. Though Vancouver's party explored the area, they did not record the bay's name. It is currently a renowned feature of the Misty Fjords National Monument.
