Title:
Barges "Louisiana" and "America", circa 1912
Photographer:
David Nicoll
Description:
Deep-water sailing vessels, particularly wooden ones, were plentiful at the start of the 20th century. Many, like these two former full-rigged ships, ended their days as barges. The Louisiana, built in Maine in 1873, and the America, built in Massachusetts in 1874, were both carrying copper ore from Prince of Wales Island to the smelter in Tacoma when this photo was taken.
