Description:
Honoring Those Who Give Totem Pole Raising, 1999
Loyd C. Heath

Tlingit master carver, Nathan Jackson, stands with apprentices, Donnie Varnell (left) and Fred Trout (right) at the raising of the Honoring Those Who Give totem pole at the Totem Heritage Center. The totem pole was commissioned by the City of Ketchikan to honor the many people, organizations and government entities that worked together to create the Totem Heritage Center. The Center preserves the living artistic traditions of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples that gave rise to the original 19th century totem poles on display and provides the opportunity to learn and practice Native arts to inspire cultural understanding.
