Alaska Native Brotherhood and Sisterhood Officer Installation, 1953
Paulu T. Saari

The October 26, 1953 edition of the Ketchikan Daily News reported that "last night at the Presbyterian Church the Alaska Native Brotherhood and Sisterhood installed officers for the coming year. For the ANB, Willis Hamilton was installed as Vice-President; Wilber Ridley, Secretary; Drency Dudley, Treasurer; Lewis Allen and George Lewis, Sergeant of Arms. For the ANS, Phyllis Gunyah took over the presidency; Violet Hamilton, Vice-President; Joe Williams (center), Grand President, was the installing officer." The oldest known Indigenous civil rights organization in the world, ANB was founded in 1912, a time when Alaska Natives were not United States citizens. ANS formed shortly afterwards and together these groups continue to work towards equity for Alaska Natives.
