Sustaining Community
Description:
1st Place King Salmon Derby Trophy, 1955

Over 1,000 community members of all ages participate in the annual King Salmon Derby, a long standing tradition dating back to 1944. Usually beginning over the Memorial Day weekend in May, participants vie for bragging rights and over $10,000 in prizes. Volunteers weigh fish at local marinas and the local radio stations offer regular updates on the leader board each day. Derby ticket profits support a local education fund. The derby has been canceled in recent years due to a decrease in the King salmon population.

Kit Wood reeled in the biggest fish of the 1955 derby at 60 pounds, 6 ounces.
