Description:
Naaxiin (Chilkat) Apron with "Generic Bird" Design, circa 2001
Kathryn Rousso

This apron is made using Merino wool and thigh spun cedar bark, with a deer hide backing. Rousso used both two-strand and three-strand twining and braiding. John Livingston was commissioned to make a "generic bird" design and pattern board for this apron. The cedar bark was thigh spun by Alena Mountford.
"I moved to Ketchikan in 1983 and shortly thereafter began taking classes at the Totem Heritage Center (THC) taught by Delores Churchill, Cheryl Samuel, and Dorica Jackson. I took several Chilkat weaving classes from Dorica Jackson at the THC, then a two week Chilkat class with Cheryl Samuel at the Metchosin School of Arts (Pearson College) near Victoria B.C., Canada.

After these classes, I began weaving this apron on my own, which took me ten years to complete."
