BOOM TOWN : Ketchikan in the 1950s
Title:
Going to Work. Water Street, April 1, 1954
Photographer:
Paulu T. Saari
Description:
Traveling between downtown and Newtown and the West End was a nightmare during construction of the tunnel and widening of Water Street. Auto traffic was one-way, with long delays - when auto traffic was allowed at all. Here, crowds of commuters, including construction workers in their hard hats, "hoof it" to their jobs through Newtown.
