"THERE THEY GO! The four entrants in the 10 to 15 hp. family runabouts jockey for position in the first boat race Saturday evening.
Water Races Attract Huge Crowd
Large crowds lined the waterfront to watch the Fourth of July boat races, which were held Saturday afternoon. Eight races were held, beginning with a race for 10 to 15 hp. family runabouts, which was won by Jay Shinn, with Larry Whallen and B. Maston coming in second and third. In the 16-22 hp family runabout class, Del Freimuth placed first, John Reese second. The third race was for 25-33 hp. outboards, in which Del Freimuth placed first, John Reese second and Jack Morse third. In the 10-25 hp. hydroplane class, Sylvia Freimuth placed first, Bill DePuel second and C. W. Mackey third. Miss Freimuth took a dunking in a later race. A free-for-all unlimited power outboard race attracted eight starters, of whom only two finished, with four boats in collisions or dropping out. C. W. Mackey took first in the event, with Del Freimuth second.
OUTBOARD WINS
A grudge race, with outboards vying against inboards, resulted in Larry Freinmth taking first place with an outboard, Dean Morgan second with a 100-hp inboard.
Frank Williams' seiner Eleanor took first place in the seine boat race, and the Sudan, owned by Harley Bray, came in first in the trollers' race. Judges were Perry Yates, who also was timekeeper, Vic Guns, the city manager; and Jay Gibson jr., of the First National bank. Chairman of the boat races was George C. Van Galder of the Alaska Outboard service."
