Title:
Red Men Antics, Fourth of July Parade, 1953
Photographer:
Paulu T. Saari
Description:
They are in front of Billingsley's jewelry and curio store, on Mission Street at Main (now the Alaska Trading Company.) The two totem poles outside the store were downtown landmarks for a quarter century. Commissioned by Billingsley, they were carved by Sydney Campbell, a Metlakatla carver. After Billingsley's closed in 1954, the totems were sold and shipped to a museum in Geneva, Switzerland. The "Billingsley clock", visible alongside the totems, is now in Whale Park.
