Title:
Army Signal Corps Cable-Laying Ship Albert J. Myer Arriving at the Alaska Steamship Dock, July 1956
Photographer:
Paulu T. Saari
Description:
The Myer had just completed laying the first of two undersea telephone cables between Port Angeles, Washington and Ketchikan. The 750-mile-long cables connected to another undersea cable running between Ketchikan and Skagway. The new system provided 36 voice circuits between Alaska and the Lower 48, more than double the capacity previously provided by radio and land lines.
