Then & Now : A community photography exhibit connecting Ketchikan's past to the present through the recreation of historic photos
Title:
Rotary's "Bugge" Beach
Description:
Norwegian miner Magnus "Martin" Bugge arrived in Ketchikan in 1901 with gold fever. Bugge bought several mining claims, including one that included present—day Rotary Beach. After the 1925 road expansion to Saxman provided easier access south of town, families started taking advantage of the beach for swimming and picnics. Given the beach's popularity, the Rotary Club raised $2,500 in 1930 to purchase the property from Bugge for a public park. Eighty—five years later, local families still look forward to enjoying a sunny day at this cherished Ketchikan setting.
