Marjorie "Marge" Nebel and Her Son Walt on Pennock Island

Marge was born and raised in Oregon. Around age 19, she decided to move to where there were no snakes. She settled on Ketchikan. Once in Ketchikan, she lived across the street from the Ellis Air Lines hangar on Tongass Avenue. Marge flew for Ellis and is credited with teaching some of the pilots to drive cars. Next door to Ellis, Marge built her own hangar for her floatplanes. One of her planes featured a painting by Father Andrew Vachon of Casper the Friendly Ghost.
While flying for Ellis, she married one of their mechanics Walt Nebel, Sr. Marge is shown here with her son Walt Nebel, Jr. on Pennock Island in toddler-sized mechanics coveralls she made herself. The family was outdoor enthusiasts and used her personal plane and the family boats to travel all over Southeast Alaska.
Walt Sr. took a job with Boeing in Seattle and the family relocated in the late 1960s.
