Title:
Dixie Jewett, Pilot for Todd's Air Service, circa 1970-1973
Photographer:
Ketchikan Daily News staff
Description:
Dixie grew up in rural Montana on a farm with horses and heavy equipment. In her early twenties, she hit the road and wound up in Alaska. "Finally," she recalled, "I ran out of money in Ketchikan, so I got a job there driving a taxi." Before long Dixie learned to fly seaplanes and other small aircraft herself, spending almost 15 years working in Alaska as a commercial pilot for Todd's Air Service.
Her childhood familiarity with machinery led her to start rebuilding old aircraft. From souping up their engines to modifying their bodies and restoring their fabric skins, she continues this pastime today. Dixie moved to the Willamette Valley of Oregon in the mid-1990's where she builds scrap metal sculptures.
