Description:
Alaskans danced in the streets until midnight when the U.S. Senate passed the Alaska Statehood Bill. The center of the Ketchikan festivities was the intersection of Front and Mission Streets. The Statehood bill passed by a vote of 64 to 20. Alaska officially became the 49th state on January 3, 1959.
