Music Group Rehearses For Rotary
Local Hand-made Violin Displayed
Last evening at the home of Drs. C. Martin Carlson and Dr. Margaret Carlson at 323 Edmond street, a String ensemble under the direction of Emerson Scott began to shape up nicely for a part on Rotarian Bill Boardman's "Rotary Anne" program which will be held some time in April.
Also on the committee are Ed Sande, Dr. C. M. Carlson, Jack Sherman, Pete DeBoer and King Brice.
The recently formed string ensemble which was organized by Mr. Scott and Drs. Carlson is composed of the following: Violins, Ralph Olson, Mrs. Anne Riley, Mrs. Florence Burgoyne, Ray Turek, David Baker, Robert Dassow and Scott; violas, Mrs. Ralph Olson and H. Struthers; bass viol, Arthur Turek, and a cellist is yet to be named.
At the piano during the rehearsals have been Hope Ohashi and Teresa Cordell, both of whom have been asked to be present at the Rotary affair.
GENGLER VIOLINS
The group has from time to time featured Charles Gengler's violins made with Alaska spruce which is said to be the world's finest wood for violin making. For years, Mr. Gengler and others have been building up a side-line in selling Alaska spruce to violin-makers, and Gengler's own violins have won great favor in many places.
The violin used by Marylin Powers in the big Lions club competition in Seattle, where she won a place in the finals in competition with 105 Seattle junior violinists, is a Gengler violin.
At a recital held at the home of Mr. C. M. Carlson last night, a violin made by Charles Gengler was shown. The instrument is made of Alaskan spruce which is reported to give a tone five octaves higher than other wood. In the above picture, the violin, held by Gengler, is being compared with one owned by Ralph Olsen (left). Mrs. Olsen is looking on.
