Mabel Becker
Mabel and Jim "Becky" Becker lived in the Ketchikan area starting in 1937. They logged many of the bays, coves, and inlets from here to Wrangell. They ran small one or two person operations, logging in the summer and trapping during the winter. Their camps were always on floats and they seldom spent more than a year in one place. No matter where they were, there were usually fishermen in the area, or perhaps another gypo logger (small-scale logging operation) down the chuck a mile or so, and they seldom spent a Christmas alone.
There were times when the Beckers would not see a town for a year. They depended on mail boats, fishing boats, tugs, and friends for supplies and mail. Their visitors brought them food and news, but also a sense of community far from town.
Mabel recorded every guest that visited with photos and notes on dinner and dessert. No visit was complete without guests signing their name in her guest book. Four volumes of scrapbooks document their hospitality and the companionship of guests that visited over the decades they operated their float camp.
