Monthly Grind
Held on the third Saturday of the month from September through May, the Monthly Grind is an eclectic showcase of local talent, featuring music, poetry, theatre and cultural performances. Entirely produced by volunteers, the Grind was founded over 30 years ago by Peggy Hovik, Halli Kenoyer, Carolyn Minor and Eric Hummel. A traditional cedar longhouse, the Saxman Tribal House, is home to this beloved event. "Halftime" is 20 minutes of coffee and desserts brought by audience members in exchange for free admission. Fully participatory, the audience also puts away the chairs at the end of the night.
As the producers note, "the Monthly Grind is always a ray of sunshine and a breath of fresh air on a rainy winter night. The glow inside the tribal house from the enthusiastic, usually sold out crowd is heartwarming indeed. One of the best descriptions of the Monthly Grind is, '300 people, all rowing in the same direction.'"
