Description:
First Lutheran Church on Tongass Avenue, circa 1930
Elliot L. Fisher

Many Norwegians moved to Ketchikan between 1900 and 1940, drawn by the robust halibut fishing industry and its resemblance to their homeland. To meet the needs of these Lutheran families, the First Lutheran Church organized in 1925 and built this church in 1930. At the time the church opened, 96 percent of the congregation were Norwegian immigrants.
