Description:
Blessing of the Fleet, 2019
Scott Brainard
Members of the Coast Guard, the Ketchikan Fire Department and the Misty Thistle Pipe and Drums gather at Thomas Basin for the Blessing of the Fleet. The blessing kicks off the Celebration of the Sea Art Walk coordinated by the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council, held on the first Friday of May.
The annual Blessing of the Fleet is held at the beginning of each fishing season. The tradition is meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season. Part of the blessing of the fleet involves memorializing those lost at sea. Those in attendance toss flowers into the harbor in remembrance of family members, friends, and loved ones who never returned.
