Sustaining Community
Description:
Wearable Art Coat, circa 1995
Jean Bartos

Artists come together every February to showcase their creativity at the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council's Wearable Art Show. Imagine a high fashion runway show meets Ketchikan chic with every imaginable "fabric" (a blue tarp dress, anyone?), all set to music. A tradition since 1985, the Wearable Art Show features over 50 local artists and models and includes four performances. Community volunteers are an integral part of this beloved Ketchikan fundraiser, with local culinary arts featured in a pre-show buffet. School groups get involved as well, modeling their own creations during a matinee and inspiring the next generation of Wearable art.

Here, Jean Bartos showcases a classic coat design with warp made from wool that she made on her loom and weft made from dry cleaner bags.
