Instructor Student Case 2023
Description:
Tináa
Copper Shield, 2022
Sagoot, Katie Carlson
Tlingit, Raven - Dog Salmon Clan

Tináa means copper shield in Lingít, the Tlingit language. A tináa is a symbol of wealth in Tlingit society. Copper shields have been used by Indigenous people along the Northwest Coast to demonstrate a clan's wealth. A copper shield represented more than just the value of the copper and gained value each time it was exchanged. Contemporary artists continue to create copper shields, often as pendants for necklaces or earrings.

This tináa pendant is attached to a leather necklace decorated with trade beads. It was created during the Tináa Making Workshop taught by Eechdaa, Dave Ketah, in 2022.
"I made this tináa for my godson Keenan Sanderson, who graciously let me borrow it to showcase."
