Description:
Seaweed Hat
Plated Cedar Bark Hat, 2023
Christina Weber
Tlingit and Haida, Double-Headed Raven - Dog Salmon Clan

This plaited cedar bark hat is made with red and yellow cedar bark, and dyed red cedar. It is woven in the Tsimshian style. The plaited double warp hat has rows of basic Z-twist, three way twining, alternating colors with chasing, and a three way braided ending. This hat was created during the Intermediate/Advance - Cedar Bark Plaiting class taught by Mangyepsa Gyipaayg, Kandi McGilton, in 2023.
"I completed my first Tsimshian plated hat with my instructor Mangyepsa Gyipaayg, Kandi McGilton. Háw'aa gunalchéesh for inspiring me to continue to learn new techniques. It was my first time weaving in the Tsimshian style and it was a little more challenging. Normally when I'm weaving I weave left to right but with Tsimshian you weave right to left. My mom pointed out that the color reminds her of seaweed since it is green and black. I'm blessed and honored to learn and teach others about weaving! I continue to take classes at the Totem Heritage Center to gain more knowledge to pass on to future generations."
