Description:
Alaskans danced in the streets until midnight when the U.S. Senate passed the Alaska Statehood Bill. The Statehood bill passed by a vote of 64 to 20 (12 Senators did not vote). The center of the Ketchikan festivities was the intersection of Front and Mission Streets. Alaska officially became the 49th state on January 3, 1959.
