BOOM TOWN : Ketchikan in the 1950s
Title:
Aerial View of Ketchikan, February 15, 1954
Photographer:
Paulu T. Saari
Description:
Floating fish traps in winter layup at lower left. Above them, the Alaska Communication System radio antennas can be seen. Third, Second, and First Avenues angle off Tongass Avenue. Bar Harbor has not yet been built. In the distance, smoke rises from the Ketchikan Spruce Mills wigwam wood waste burner.

The two large waterfront buildings at the center of the photo, on the near and far sides of the high-rise apartments, are marine ways. The nearer is Northern Machine Works, located where the Cedar Point condominiums are now between Safeway and Bar Harbor. The more distant is McKay Marine Ways in the 1900 block of Tongass.
