Description:
Alder Park (the complex of light-colored, uniform buildings at left, was a public housing project erected in the early Fifties. (The Pioneer Home and Sea View Terrace Apartments, across from each other on Bryant Street, now occupy the site.) To the right, the Carlanna district is beginning to expand up the hill. In the foreground, on Charcoal Point, are the remains of the Bertoson sawmill, which burned in 1951. The Alaska Marine Highway ferry terminal now occupies the site.

"Fire Destroys Bertoson Sawmill, Einstoss Cannery
Fire starting in the boiler room of the Bertoson sawmill on Tongass Avenue at about 5:20 PM yesterday totally destroyed the mill and the S. Einstoss salmon cannery. Damage has been estimated at $100,000."
