Description:

Chilkat Pattern Board, 1983

Nathan Jackson
Tlingit

Pattern boards are a guide for weavers when making a Chilkat robe. The design and painting of the pattern board were traditionally done by a man. The designs are always symmetrical, so the pattern boards show only one-half of the design. A Thunderbird design is depicted on this pattern board.
