Otto Johansen grew up in Cordova, Alaska. After getting out of the Army he returned home and learned carpentry skills at a cannery. Eventually Otto moved to Ketchikan where he has lived for the past 70 years. Otto was superintendent at Northern Marine Works, which specialized in vessel repair. Otto built the F/V Oddie in Ketchikan between 1968- 1973. He built the hull at 3453 Baranof Avenue and completed the boat on the beaches by Madison’s Lumber and Hardware. The boat was named after Otto's wife, Oddveig Johansen. Otto fished the boat for a few years before passing it to his son, Eric Johansen, who gillnetted in the Tree Point area. The day of the interview, May 26, 2021, was the last day that the F/V Oddie was moored in Ketchikan. The vessel currently resides at the Johansen home in Coffman Cove on Prince of Wales Island.
