David E. Hashagen, Owner and Captain of F/V Voyager

David E. Hashagen is a lifelong fisherman and trapper. The F/V Voyager is his fifth boat. The Wahls, a notable boat-building family in Prince Rupert, Canada built the boat in 1975. It was originally built as a troller and crabbed in Hecate Strait, between Haida Gwaii and British Columbia. Between 1996 and 2000, fearing a collapse of the fishing industry, the Canadian government instituted a buy back program to reduce the number of fishing licenses. Boat owners who voluntarily gave up their fishing license were allowed to keep their vessels but were not allowed to fish. Thus, David purchased the F/V Voyager in 2000 for the reasonable sum of $6,200. In the summer David gillnets in the Tree Point area and in the winter he lives aboard the boat in Thomas Basin.
