Grandy Boat Works in Seattle built the F/V Alsek in 1946 to tender on the Alsek River near Yakutat, Alaska. It was built with an especially stout keel to navigate a sandbar on the river. Soon after being built, it changed ownership and began seining. The F/V Alsek has seined salmon and herring in Southeast Alaska, Puget Sound, and around Kodiak. In 1968, the boat sank near Bellingham, Washington hauling a load of herring. Larry Painter of Ketchikan resuscitated the boat after the accident, adding decorative wood and metal finishes. Larry was one of the first in the fleet to use refrigerated salt water in the fish hold and adopted half pursing. John Peckham bought the boat in 1987 and has owned and seined it since then.
