Instructor Student Case 2023
Description:
Tunic with Lovebirds, 2023
Ella Bullock
Tlingit

Tlingit society is divided into opposite sides, Ch'áak' (Eagle) and Yéil (Raven), which create balance and harmony. The Lovebird design represents the union of two opposites becoming one. Raven is identified by the longer straight beak and Eagle with the shorter curved beak.

This tunic was created during the Spring Break Youth Regalia - Tunics class taught by Aanchgwanutk, Janice L. Jackson, in 2023. Students learned how to create a wool tunic, develop and plan the appliqued design, and adorn the tunic with buttons and beadwork.
"My grandma taught me how to sew. I started when I was six or seven. I learned to weave when I was nine and took the weaving class last spring. I like drawing and sewing."
