Instructor Student Case 2024
Description:
Beaded Collar, 2022
Sagoot, Katie Carlson
Tlingit, Raven - Dog Salmon Clan

This collar is made with wool felt, leather, abalone buttons, seed beads, and is trimmed with dyed fox fur. It was created during the Mixed-Level Regalia - Beaded Hide Collars class taught by Aanchgwanutk, Janice L. Jackson, in 2022.
"I had a naming ceremony in 2022. Sagoot was my great grandmother. She was a tough, strong woman and was one of the last people in our family who traditionally harvested. Her daughter, my grandmother, went to Sheldon Jackson [a boarding school in Sitka, Alaska] and my mother was taught to be ashamed of being Native by the world around her. Growing up we never talked about being Native. I'm now teaching my mother how to bead and she's a natural at splitting cedar bark.

I made this collar for my mother, a cherished and beautiful Indigenous woman who was in need of some regalia. The coolest part of making regalia is the connection to our ancestors. I don't know what I'd do without this. It's my passion."
