Instructor Student Case 2024
Description:
Woven Bottle with Fleur-de-lis, 2024
Caroline Luckey
Haida and Tsimshian

This woven bottle is made with yellow and red cedar bark with canary grass and maidenhair fern false embroidery. Luckey used maidenhair fern to create the purple Fleur-de-lis design, a reference to her son Chris' roots in New Orleans. The woven bottle was created during the Intermediate/Advanced Level Cedar Bark Weaving - Glass Bottles class taught by Mangyepsa Gyipaayg, Kandi McGilton, in 2024.
"Weaving reflects who you are. I'm Haida and Tsimshian. My grandfather, George Mather Sr., was a carver and Casper Mather was my great uncle. I began weaving because I felt a need to connect. My first weaving class was with Holly Churchill at the Heritage Center in 2000. I have spent many years learning to weave in the Haida style. I was excited for this class with Kandi because it was my first time weaving in the Tsimshian style."
