Instructor Student Case 2025
Description:
Dancing Seal
Leggings, 2025
Joanne Ray
Yupik

These leggings are made from deer hide, wool felt, abalone buttons, seed beads, and trimmed with beaver fur. They were created during the Intermediate/Advanced Level Regalia - Deer Hide Leggings class taught by Aanchgwanutk, Janice L. Jackson, in 2025.
"These leggings are dedicated to Jessica, my beautiful daughter-in-law, for being one of my biggest supporters and for always encouraging me to continue my artwork.

I take classes to get in touch with my heritage. Having been born and raised here, there aren't many Yupik people, but we share many similar traditions and values with the ones held here. Yupik people don't have clan moieties or crests designs, so I chose a seal design for the front of my leggings.

Seals play a very important role in Yupik life. We have many uses for seals in our culture. They provide food with meat and rendered oil; materials for clothing such as moccasins, fur parkas, and gut parkas; materials for daily life, like bladders for buoy floats, water carriers, food storage containers, and oil for lanterns.

This little guy turned out better than I expected. I stepped out of my comfort zone by using different sized beads for the whiskers, eyes, and nose. Figuring out the placement and getting everything to fit together was challenging, but it was so much fun to make."
