Description:

Chief Son-I-Hat's Cedar Bark Neck Ring

Haida leader Kóyongxung (Chief Son-I-Hat) of the Yáadaas, a Kuusdek Eagle Clan. Kóyongxung was born in 1829, and lived in Kasa'áan (New Kasaan) on Táan (Prince of Wales Island). He was considered a wealthy man having run an extensive fur trading network. "Son-I-Hat" comes from a Tlingit word meaning "well-respected". In 1901 he gifted his Old Kasaan Eagle house and its totem poles to the Sitka National Historic Park in answer to a request from Alaska Territorial Governor Brady. Kóyongxung died in 1912 at the age of 83
