Description:

Eagle Beaver Memorial Pole at Old Kasaan, 1967

Jane Demmert

This photograph, taken as part of the 1969 survey by the Alaska State Museum, Smithsonian Institution, and Alaska Native Brotherhood and Alaska Native Sisterhood, shows the Eagle-Beaver pole from Kasa'áan (Old Kasaan). Note that a baby beaver face is attached to the pole in the photograph, but absent today. When the crew returned to retrieve the pole, not too long after this picture was taken, the baby beaver face had been stolen. The theft helped compel Project Coordinator Dennis Demmert to move ahead with the retrievals.
