Description:

Thunderbird Dance Mask, 2001

Donald M. Varnell
Haida

Masks are used to tell important stories and historical events through the wearer's performance during a traditional celebration or ceremony.

Masks often represent animals, humans, and mythical figures. Masks may also symbolize treasured stories of how the rights to particular crests, songs, names, and stories were obtained by a clan or individual.

During performances, masks are used to transform the wearer ensuring the stories are remembered and passed on through the generations. This also serves to publicly validate the significance of the masks and the events they recount.
