Instructor Student Case 2020
Description:

Kigw
Haida Style Basket, 2018

Stacey Williams
Tlingit

This red and yellow cedar bark gathering basket is made in the Haida style with twining (2-way/ 3-way/ twill), incorporating fish eye and chase design elements. This basket was made while Stacey was studying with Holly Churchill to learn about utilitarian items. The basket is intended for sturdy use on the beach or in the woods. Additional warps added to the outside base of the basket reinforce and protect the woven rows from the environment.

Born into the Dog Salmon clan of the Aak'w Kwaan, L'eeneidi Tlingit tribe of Southeast Alaska, Williams is an artist, instructor, and Northwest Coast art enthusiast. As an artist, she is inspired by working to maintain the delicate balance of traditional knowledge and contemporary growth of Native culture. As an educator, she instills hope in her students that the arts will persist and motivates many to delve deeper into her love that is Northwest Coast art.
