April Varnell
Haida
Twined yellow cedar bark basket with rattle top lid. The upper and lower bands on the basket (two outer and one inner) are twined in purple dyed cedar bark. The outer edge of each band is "strawberry" weave. Three colors of purple grass, false embroidery make up the middle band on the base. The central design is purple and pink dyed cedar bark in the shape of an upside down arrow alternating with an outlined "Z" shape. The lid is an open variation of "fern frond" pattern.
April Varnell is the daughter of Delores Churchill and the granddaughter of Selina Peratrovich, both renowned Haida weavers.
