Clam Basket, 1988
Lisa LeMay Doyon
This miniature spruce root clam basket is made in the Haida style. It was made by Lisa while she was in a Native Arts Studies Program class taught by Delores Churchill in 1988. The class traveled to Haida Gwaii, British Columbia to harvest spruce root.
"They had planned our hike (it was a long hike up creek in the woods), so we came upon the spruce tree at high noon. The bright overhead sun filtered through the golden needles and sparkled, it was magic. It was breathtaking thing to see. I have never seen another like it in my life. It glittered in the sun."
